We condemn threats by Clarion Housing to evict vulnerable tenants of the Peter Bedford Housing Association who have previously experienced homelessness. Sixty people living in properties in Finsbury Park have received letters telling them that they will have to move out.
Clarion Housing boasts a turnover of more than £1bn and over £230m in operating profits. The company’s CEO, Claire Miller, has a total pay packet of £450,000 per year.
There is already a huge housing crisis within Finsbury Park ward, where more than a third of residents live in overcrowded homes, according to Islington council. Across the wider borough there are more than 16,000 people on the council’s housing register and nearly 2000 in temporary accommodation, while rents have spiralled and residents face long waits for repairs. Yet the government continues to make cuts to housing budgets and basic services while increasing funding for war and weapons systems.
- We call on Clarion, and Peter Bedford Housing Association which leases the properties, to withdraw the threat of eviction and carry out necessary repairs, without forcing residents to leave their vital support networks and community.
- We demand that the government brings in rent controls and supports social housing through cutting back on war spending.
